How to avoid beard dandruff

Beard dandruff is one of the biggest and most uncomfortable facial hair problems and it may actually be more common than you might think. Some studies assert that 50% of the overall population has varying stages of dandruff.

So what causes this uncomfortable skin problem? There can be a lot of different causes, but the three most common ones are dry skin, cold weather and a type of bacteria that lives on the skin. These three factors or a few combined together can cause your skin to flake off. But don't worry, we are are here to help, with some tips on how you can avoid or stop dandruff.

Keep your skin clean

Just like your body or the hair on your head, facial hair can attract a lot of dirt and dust. That's why it's important to wash your face and beard twice a day to get rid of dirt and oil. Keeping it clean will help to prevent your pores from clogging and causing dandruff.

DON’T use a regular anti-dandruff shampoo or conditioner

One of the biggest mistakes that people make when trying to heal the dandruff in their beards, is using a regular anti-dandruff shampoo/conditioner like Head and Shoulders. Although this may sound like a good idea, it's actually not. Why? Because a regular shampoo or conditioner is designed specifically for your scalp.

The ingredients used in the regular shampoo's will not be suitable for your beard, because the skin on your face is far more sensitive than that on your head. It might irritate it even more, leading to more dead skin flakes and itching.

Use a beard soap or wash instead

The reason why beard soaps and washes are better for your facial hair is because they were made for dermatological use. It contains gentler ingredients that work with both, your face and facial hair.

Beard soap and wash will not only clean your beard, but hydrate it as well. These products will clear any dead skin under your facial hair and prevent it from building up in the skin follicles, which usually leads to irritation.  It's best to use these products 3-4 times a week.

Try changing your shower routine

First, we recommend to try taking cooler showers. We know, hot showers feel great, but it can dry your skin out by removing the natural oils from your skin, which can lead to dandruff.

Second, be sure to fully dry your beard out after you take a shower. If you wash yourself with hard water, the high mineral content can irritate the skin underneath, as facial hair has a tendency to absorb water. So if you have a dandruff, take some time to dry your beard, even if it means that you have to blow dry it.

Moisturise it

In order to keep your skin healthy and flake-free it's important to moisturise it every day. A good quality beard oil is ideal to get the job done. The biggest benefit of this product is that it can reach the skin beneath the beard and moisturise it, while preventing the beard from drying out.

Mo Bro’s beard oils contain a mix of essential oils, that soften facial hair, moisturise the skin underneath and reduce itching. It will condition the beard, without weighting it down or clogging up the pores.

Brush or comb your beard

A lot of guys skip this step, because they don't realise how beneficial it is for the beard. Combing your beard regularly will keep it clean and prevent any ingrown hairs, because it will prevent them from curling up.

Most importantly, it will keep your beard moisturised. There is only so much that you can reach when you apply the product to your palms and rub into the hair. When you comb your beard daily after applying the moisturiser, the teeth of the comb will evenly distribute this product to the areas that need it the most.
